4 hurt in boat explosion in Inner Harbor

Four people were injured -- one critically -- when a 32-foot boat exploded shortly after refueling near the Rusty Scupper restaurant in the Inner Harbor yesterday, police said.

The Wellcraft motor yacht is registered to Glen Burnie resident Matthew Kim, 58, of the 1600 block of Marley Ave., police said. Kim was in serious but stable condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center last night.

The boat's passengers, Myung Lee, 49, who is visiting from Seoul, South Korea, and Chandy Yi, 48, of Fort Lee, N.J., were taken to the trauma center, police said. Lee was listed in critical condition, and Yi was in serious but stable condition last night.

Marina employee Edward Smith, 48, of Baltimore was treated and released from University of Maryland Medical Center for an injury to his wrist. He had fueled the boat before it exploded about 5:30 p.m.

Police said a failure to ventilate the boat during the refueling process caused the explosion, which witnesses said split the boat in half.
