Five turnovers foil McDaniel in 23-20 loss to Bridgewater

McDaniel, No. 17 in Division III, had five turnovers against 11th-ranked Bridgewater, wasting an otherwise prolific offensive day in a 23-20 football loss at home yesterday.

The Eagles (1-0) answered the Green Terror's 13-3 halftime lead with a third-quarter field goal, then blocked a punt on McDaniel's next possession to set up a 1-yard touchdown from quarterback Robbie Jenkins.

McDaniel (0-1) responded with a 56-yard touchdown pass from John Luster (South Carroll) to Joe Ellis (Oakland Mills), part of a 481-yard day for the Green Terror offense, but the Eagles scored with 32 seconds left to secure the win.

Salisbury 20, Christopher Newport 13: Freshman Dustin Johnson rushed for one touchdown and passed for another to lead the host Sea Gulls (1-0) over the Captains (0-1).

Johnson had 102 yards rushing and was one of three Salisbury players to finish with more than 100 yards on the ground. Senior Tony Ellis led the Sea Gulls with 121 yards, and senior fullback Reggie Boyce added 105 yards.

Bowie State 7, Johnson C. Smith 6: A missed extra point after a third-quarter Golden Bulls touchdown was enough to give the Bulldogs the win in their home opener.

Bowie State limited Johnson C. Smith (0-2, 0-1 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) to 99 yards of offense, but needed an interception by Antone' Sewell on the final play for the win.
