A 32-year-old Sykesville man has been charged with driving while intoxicated and fleeing the scene of an accident after a school bus was sideswiped yesterday afternoon in Woodbine, according to state police at the Westminster barracks.

Steven Ray Hobson, of the 5600 block Rhonda Road, also was charged with driving with a suspended or revoked license, failing to keep right, reckless driving and failing to reduce speed to avoid a collision. None of the 14 elementary-school children on the 1992 International Harvester bus was injured, said Lt. Terry L. Katz, the barracks commander.

The accident occurred just after 3 p.m. on a curve along Eden Mill Road, the police said. Witnesses said two men ran from a westbound 1995 Chevrolet pick-up truck after it crossed the center line and struck the driver's side of the eastbound school bus, police said. One suspect was arrested when he returned to the scene, claiming he had been a passenger, and witnesses identified him as the driver, according to the police.

A passenger in the pickup truck, Eric Michael Wright, 20, of the 3900 block of Bixler Church Road, north of Westminster, was arrested about 20 minutes later about a mile away from the accident, and was charged with under-age possession of alcohol, the police said.
