4 Pimlico wins leave Pino 5 short of 5,000

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Jockey Mario Pino won four races yesterday at Pimlico Race Course and now stands five shy of becoming the 18th rider in history to reach 5,000 in his career.

Pino scored on his first two mounts, visiting the winner's circle in the second race with Wild Coast ($4.20) and the third aboard Makin Heat ($2.80). In the seventh, he guided Banner Boy ($9.20) to victory on the grass, and in the ninth, he rode Bowman Mill ($3) to the wire on the same surface.

"I was on some good horses today, and they all came through," said Pino, who will turn 41 Sunday. "Now that we are down to the final five, I am thinking about it more, but in turn I'm going to enjoy it. To look at the names of the other jockeys on the 5,000 win list gives me chills, and I am honored to be in this elite company."

Pino is named to ride in seven of today's 10 races, six tomorrow and seven Saturday.
