Hope and healing: Commemorating 9/11

As the one-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 tragedies approaches, churches, synagogues, schools, museums and other institutions are planning events to mark the date. Following is a guide to area commemorations, including candlelight vigils, religious services, concerts of sacred and secular music, tributes to police and firefighters, poetry readings, open discussions, art exhibits and readings of the names of casualties.

Baltimore area

"Baltimore Run to Remember." The 5K run of remembrance begins at 7 a.m. Wednesday at the Baltimore City police headquarters, 601 E. Fayette St., and finishes at Rash Field. "Patriot Day" event features a tribute to those who lost their lives on 9/11 and to those who serve and protect our freedoms, 8:15 a.m. Wednesday. On display will be a 200-pound portion of an I-beam from one of the World Trade Center buildings. Visitors are encouraged to wear red, white and blue, and military, police and firefighters are encouraged to wear their uniforms. Lawn of 2700 N. Calvert St. Art therapist Cathy Goucher and dance/movement therapist Debora Sbaiz will lead residents of Charles Village and surrounding neighborhoods in making a "traffic" sign commemorating 9/11 at a workshop 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday on the lawn at 2700 N. Calvert St. The signs will stand at the intersection of Calvert and 27th streets through early Wednesday evening. At 7 p.m. Wednesday, members of the communities are invited to a candlelight gathering where they can offer reflections on the artwork, the events of Sept. 11, 2001, and the future direction of the country. The Annapolis Chorale and the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra will take part in "Rolling Requiem," a worldwide choral commemoration of the tragedy of 9/11. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, off Virginia and New Hampshire avenues Northwest.
