County closings for Labor Day announced

Carroll County government offices will be closed tomorrow in observance of Labor Day.

Offices will reopen at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Northern Landfill and the Recycling Center will be closed and will reopen at 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Carroll County public libraries, schools and senior centers also will be closed.

Nominations for Canon Humanitarian Award open

The Community Service Council is accepting nominations for the 2002 Sylvia V. Canon Humanitarian Award, established last year to recognize Canon's many contributions to the county and its citizens.

The award is given to an individual initiating or sustaining outstanding quality human services in Carroll County. Nominees must be current paid employees or retired from a human service organization that provides services to the county.

Nominees also must demonstrate creativity, innovation and commitment that has a positive influence on individuals or the larger community.

Nomination forms are available from all public library branches or contacting Audrey Cimino at 410-876-5505. Deadline for nominations is 5 p.m. Sept. 23.

The award will be presented Oct. 23 at the Community Service Council meeting at Harry's Main Street Grill.

House candidates forum Thursday in Eldersburg

A forum for House of Delegate candidates in the South Carroll Legislative District 9B will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Community Gymnasium in Eldersburg.

All of the eight candidates -- two Democrats and six Republicans running for the one delegate seat -- are expected to attend.

Issues that will be addressed include managing growth in the region, managing the cost of government and minimum wage law. A limited number of questions will be taken from the audience.

Historical society lunch features Civil War author

The Historical Society of Carroll County will hold its monthly box lunch talk at noon Sept. 10 at Church of the Ascension, 23 N. Court St., Westminster.

G. Thomas Legore, co-author of the book, Just South of Gettysburg, will present accounts of the arrests of Southern sympathizers, local citizens going to the South to enlist and the appearance of Confederate cavalrymen in Westminster before the battle of Antietam.

Participants should take a lunch. Beverage and dessert will be provided. Admission is $2 for nonmembers; free for historical society members. Reservations are recommended. Information: 410-848-6494.

Freedom council to hold candidate forum Thursday

The Freedom Area Citizens' Council will hold a Carroll County Commissioner Forum at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Sykesville-Freedom Fire Hall.

Each candidate will be asked five questions on issues pertinent to the Freedom area. Two-minute responses will be allowed by each candidate.

The fire hall is on Route 32 at Freedom Avenue.

Family Center plans trip, Grandparents Day

The Carroll County Family Center will offer activities for members this month on the theme "Strolling Down Memory Lane."

A trip will be taken to Dutch Wonderland in Lancaster, Pa., from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The cost is $5 for ages 4 and older.

Grandparents Day will be celebrated from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sept. 10. Members are invited to bring their children's grandparents for stories, crafts and food.

The center will be closed Sept. 11 for painting. Volunteers from United Way will spend part of their "Day of Caring" sprucing up the center.

Registration is required for programs, especially trips.
