Key football games
DeMatha (0-0) vs. Gilman (0-0)
When/Site: 7 p.m., Morgan State University
Outlook: The DeMatha Stags of Hyattsville bring a 22-game winning streak to Baltimore, and return QB Ryan Mitch and WR-DB-RB Josh Wilson, each of whom is bound for Maryland, among seven starters. LB Corey Sobel (10 sacks) anchors a progam that is 1-1 against Gilman and looking to win its ninth WCAC title in 12 years. The Greyhounds return All-Metro QB Ambrose Wooden and All-Metro DE Victor Abiamiri and DE Luke Wilson, the past two of whom stand 6 feet 5. WR Anthony Triplin, who has committed to play lacrosse at Johns Hopkins, could be called upon to take the pressure off of the Greyhounds' fledgling backfield.
Mount St. Joseph (0-0) at Good Counsel (0-0)
When: 7 p.m.
Outlook: Coach Bob Milloy, whose Falcons compete with DeMatha in the WCAC, are coming off a 6-4 season that included last year's season-opening win at Mount St. Joseph. Milloy enters his second season at the Wheaton private school after having won eight public school state titles at Sherwood and Springbrook. He commands a team that returns, among its seven starters, OLs Matt Hoffman (6-6, 295) and Andrew Michael (6-4, 315) and DB Matt Sonneman and LB Matt Morrissey. Leading the Gaels are All-Metro RB-WR-DB Keon Lattimore and second-team All-Metro QB Nick Tanis, who passed for a state-record 36 touchdowns and a state-leading 2,342 yards last fall.
St. John's of D.C. (0-0) at Calvert Hall (0-0)
When: 1 p.m.
Outlook: The visiting Cadets began last year's 6-5 campaign by routing the Cardinals of Towson. This year's St. John's squad has a new coach in Elliott Uzelac, who has coached collegiately at several schools, including Navy. St. John's marqee player, DE Conrad Bolston (6-4, 265), is among the nation's top recruits at his position. Calvert Hall, which went 7-3 last season, will have to counter with OL Matt Janowski (6-4, 295) and OL Devon Douglass (6-1, 275). Second-team All-Metro DB Matt Eckerl and WR-FS Vince Delaney are also critical for the Cardinals.
