Towson at a glance

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Coach: Gordy Combs (11th season)

Last year: 3-7, 2-5

Conference: Division I-AA Patriot League

Radio: WTMD (89.7 FM)

Stadium: Towson University (11,198)

Offense: Multiple

Defense: 4-4

Top returning players: WR Jamal White, WR Jason Galloway, QB Jay Amer, DB Edmund Carazo, TB Matt Romeo, DT Juston Yelverton, OG Jason Gunning, DE Steven Nance

Top newcomers: DB Reggie Danage, RB Mikal Lundy, TE Jeff Cavanaugh

Strengths: The returns from injury by White and Gunning should substantially reawaken an offense that sputtered last season. The offensive and defensive lines are experienced and strong. Playing in a renovated stadium should supply some spark.

Weaknesses: Three of the top four tacklers graduated from the linebacker spot, leaving that area very inexperienced. The attack must be upgraded on a squad that averaged fewer than 15 points a game.

Strongest opponent: Lehigh. Picked among the top five teams in virtually every preseason Division I-AA poll, the Mountain Hawks are the class of the Patriot League. Towson has never beaten them.

Key game: Morgan State. Combs says it's imperative to christen the stadium with a strong first effort and set the tone for the season. A victory also would provide local bragging rights.
