Elaine Engle Lyons, a church musician and former vocal teacher, died of pneumonia Saturday at Johns Hopkins Geriatric Center. The Middle River resident was 84.
She taught vocal music at Glenmar Elementary School in Middle River before retiring about 25 years ago.
During a lengthy career as a church organist and choir director, she oversaw the music at Church of the Ascension in Middle River, Zion Lutheran Church in Golden Ring and Waverly United Methodist Church in Baltimore.
Born Elaine Modahl in Chicago, she earned a master's degree in music from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1940. She was a member of the Sigma Alpha Iota music sorority.
During World War II, she was an ensign in the Navy's WAVES.
She enjoyed knitting, playing bridge, ballroom dancing, travel and attending concerts and old movies.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 7 at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 1313 Wilson Point Road.
Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Rowland Dean Lyons, a retired Bethlehem Steel engineer; three sons, Randall D. Lyons of West Chester, Pa., David B. Lyons of Hurt, Va., and Warren C. Lyons of Essex; a daughter, Martha M. Seay of Dundalk; and seven grandchildren. A son, Richard P. Lyons, died in 1999.
