John Leonard Spangler, 84, Carling driver-salesman

John Leonard Spangler, a retired Carling National Brewing Co. driver-salesman, died of complications from a stroke Monday at his Glen Burnie home where he had lived for 50 years. He was 84.

Mr. Spangler was born and raised in Hampden. After graduating from city public schools, he established a two-truck delivery service between Baltimore and Washington that specialized in transporting ink and paper to government offices.

During World War II, he was a reservist with the 110th Field Artillery of the 29th Division, and he landed at Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944. He was discharged at war's end with the rank of sergeant.

Mr. Spangler, who met his future wife in England, married Gladys Congdon of Plymouth in 1945.

After the war, he went to work in 1946 as a route driver and salesman for the Arrow Brewing Co. In 1955, he joined the National Brewing Co., which later became Carling National Brewing Co., in the same capacity. He retired in 1978.

Mr. Spangler was a member of Brewery Workers Local 1010.

He was an avid crabber and fisherman.

Services were held yesterday.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Rodney Spangler of Glen Burnie.
