Baltimore officials announced yesterday that a 5-kilometer run and 1-mile walk will be held downtown Sept. 11 to remember those who died during the terrorist attacks last year and raise money to buy defibrillators for city emergency workers.

"This is an opportunity for us to come together to do something for a special cause," said City Councilwoman Catherine E. Pugh during a news conference near the race's starting line.

The St. Joseph Medical Center 5K Run To Remember will start at 7 a.m. in front of city police headquarters at 601 E. Fayette St., loop through Federal Hill and finish at Rash Field at the Inner Harbor.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Edward T. Norris said the run is a good way to help those in need and remember a tragic day in American history.

"The race itself is a great time for the police and fire departments to come together and commemorate our fallen comrades," Norris said.

Josh Levinson - owner of Charm City Run, a Timonium store that specializes in gear for runners - came up with the idea about six months ago. Since then, several corporate sponsors have donated money to underwrite the event, which will cost runners $25 to enter before Aug. 31 and $30 after that date.

Race organizers said most of the defibrillators will be given to police and firefighters. Recent studies have shown that police who have defibrillators in their cars can save more lives because they often arrive at emergency scenes before paramedics.
