THE BALTIMORE SUN

Donald E. Biederman, 67, an entertainment lawyer who put a face on the dangers of sun exposure by appearing on TV commercials showing a dark cavity where his cancerous nose had been, died Aug. 8 in Santa Monica, Calif., after a six-year battle with skin cancer.

He was founding director of the National Entertainment and Media Law Institute at Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles and general counsel of the giant Warner/Chappell Music publishing company. He wrote Law and Business of the Entertainment Industries, used in more than 80 law schools and considered the finest case book on entertainment law.

Mr. Biederman, who had a malignant form of squamous cell cancer and had undergone 58 operations in 5 1/2 years, had his nose and cheek removed in 1996. He wore a prosthetic nose that hid his missing cheek.

Doris Buchanan Smith, 68, who wrote 17 books for adolescents, including the award-winning A Taste of Blackberries in 1973, died Aug. 8 in Atlanta.

Ms. Smith, who had four children of her own, also took care of more than 200 foster children - some for a few days, others for months. She raised one foster child to adulthood.

Her other books included Return to Bitter Creek and A Pennywhistle Tree. She won the 1974 Georgia Children's Book Award and the Children's Best Book prize in Holland for Blackberries - a story about a boy whose best friend dies.

Russell Barnett Aitken, 92, an award-winning artist and champion skeet shooter and hunter, died Saturday in Newport, R.I.

Mr. Aitken worked mainly in ceramics. His work has been exhibited in a number of museums and galleries, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

He was also an explorer, writer, photojournalist and philanthropist.

From 1946 to 1949, he won 92 major skeet championship tournaments. In 1963 he was recognized by an international jury as a leading big-game hunter. His book, Great Game Animals of the World, was published in 1969.
