SCARBOROUGH, N.Y. - Mallory Crosland of Bethesda and Sally Krueger, a former Bethesda resident now living in San Francisco, lost their opening-round matches as play in the 102nd U.S. Women's Amateur championship worked its way slowly through two rounds at Sleepy Hollow Country Club yesterday.

Crosland, 3-down to Jennifer Perri of Eden Prairie, Minn., after losing the 12th to a birdie and the 13th to a par, won the 14th and 16th to draw within one. But on the 18th, she left a 30-foot putt about 6 feet short, costing her the match.

Krueger fell 2-down after three holes and never challenged Lindsay Morgan, 20, of Walla Walla, Wash., who won, 4 and 2.

The first match of the day produced the first upset, with final qualifier Liz Janangelo, from West Hartford, Conn., stopping medalist Courtney Swaim, 2 and 1, then advancing with a 4-and-3 victory over Sunny Oh of Torrance, Calif. Defender Meredith Duncan, a Curtis Cup player from Shreveport, La., also lost in 20 holes to Katherine Hull, a Pepperdine University senior from Brisbane, Australia.
