Annapolis man held without bail in Legion hall killing

THE BALTIMORE SUN

A 22-year-old Annapolis man accused of fatally shooting a Baltimore man Saturday night at the American Legion hall on Forest Drive was ordered held without bail yesterday at a hearing in District Court.

Calvin Watkins of the 1800 block of Bowman Court is being held at the Jennifer Road Detention Center in Parole. He has been charged with first-degree murder, first-degree assault and use of a handgun in commission of a felony.

Annapolis police said they have not recovered the gun that was used to kill Damon Michael Rhodes, 38, and wound Annapolis residents James Leroy Downs, 22, and Sidney Reed, 31.

Cpl. Pete Medley said detectives have not uncovered a clear motive in the Saturday night shooting, but police said it does not appear Downs and Reed were intended targets. The two were treated and released from Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Police said they arrested Watkins early Sunday after he walked into the hospital seeking treatment for a knot on his head and was identified by witnesses as the assailant.
