Instructors needed to lead seniors in exercise, crafts

The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging's Senior Nutrition Program is seeking instructors from the Maryland City/Laurel area to teach the following activities: low-impact aerobics, armchair exercise, yoga, line dancing, genealogy, crafts, and crocheting. Sign language among topics at senior centers

The state Department of Aging has scheduled the following activities for this month in the county:

Brooklyn Park Senior Center: Learn about sign language in a four-week seminar beginning at 10 a.m. Friday. 410-222- 6847.

Annapolis Senior Center: A presentation about colon cancer is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday. 410-222-1818.

Brooklyn Park Senior Center: A speaker from the American Red Cross will discuss safety for seniors at 10 a.m. Aug. 20. 410-222-6847.

Annapolis Senior Center: A certified hearing instrument specialist will conduct screenings from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 20. 410-222-1818.

Jewelry show scheduled at Brooklyn Park center

Brooklyn Park Senior Center has events scheduled for this month:

A distributor from Premier Designs will present a jewelry fashion show at 10 a.m. today and Tuesday.

Colorectal cancer screenings will be available at 10 a.m. Aug. 14 and 29.

Free hearing screenings will be available at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 14.

The movie It Happened One Night will be shown at 9 a.m. Aug. 19, followed by a discussion.

A representative of the Red Cross will offer safety tips at 10 a.m. Aug. 20.

A talk on the danger of smoking cigarettes is scheduled for 10 a.m. Aug. 22.

A discussion on back fitness will be offered at 9 a.m. Aug. 17. 410-222-6847.

Trips to Eastern Shore, Shawnee Inn planned

Pasadena Senior Center Tour Committee has several trips on its agenda, including:

Visit to the Red Roost Inn in White Haven on the Eastern Shore on Aug. 22. The cost is $54 and includes baskets of chicken, fried clam strips, fried shrimp, Maryland steamed crabs, hush puppies and corn on the cob. Sing-along entertainment will be provided by the Back Fin Banjo Band. Participants will depart at 9:15 a.m. and return about 6:30 p.m.

Shawnee-on-Delaware, Pa., Oct. 8. The cost is $70, and includes a trip to Shawnee Inn and Octoberfest in the resort village in the Poconos. A continental breakfast will be served. The day also will feature a two-hour open bar with wine, soda and beer; a buffet dinner; and bingo. Participants will depart from the center at 6:45 a.m. and return at 8 p.m. Information: 410-222-0030 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.

Pasadena center sets activities for the month

Pasadena Senior Center has announced activities for the month, including:

Sing-along with George Silate and the Gang at 10 a.m. Tuesday, and Aug. 20 and 27.

A discussion of free services for visually impaired people at 12:45 p.m. tomorrow.

Blood pressure screenings and diabetes monitoring from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday.

A session on recognizing and responding to emergencies led by Dorothy Heard of the American Red Cross at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 15.

A discussion of colon cancer led by Brenda Gallagher, a nurse with the county Department of Health, at 10 a.m. Aug. 20. Registration is due by Aug. 15.

A porcelain-flower workshop from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 21 and 23. Space is limited to 10 participants on a first-come, first-served basis. A $6 supply fee will be collected.

Blood pressure screenings and diabetes monitoring from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Aug. 22.

A van trip to Quiet Waters Park, to depart at 10:30 a.m. and return around 2 p.m. Aug 22. Participants can take lunch or purchase it at the park. Registration is due by Aug. 14.

A performance by Stuart Wong, a violinist from St. Francis School, at 12:15 p.m. Aug. 27.

A talk by Jo Shane from the Retired Senior Volunteer Program on senior volunteer opportunities from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 28.

A Labor Day Party from noon to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 29, featuring karaoke and lunch. Registration is due by Aug. 22.

Registration starts Monday for golf classes

Registration for golf instruction will be held Monday through Aug. 30 at O'Malley Senior Center. A morning session of instruction will run from 10 a.m. to noon with an afternoon session from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The first class will be held Sept. 9 at the center. The remaining classes will be held at Night Hawk Driving Range on Route 3.

The class is offered through Anne Arundel Community College. Age 60 and older must pay a $20 administrative fee to the college. Age 59 and younger must pay the $20 administrative fee plus $40 for the class.

Participants are responsible for appropriate equipment and charges incurred at the driving range. Registration is required. 410-222-6227.

Newsletter offers advice on online health resources

The Anne Arundel County Department of Health offers tips on finding reliable health resources on the Internet in the latest edition of its newsletter, "Learn to Live at Fifty Plus."

Brooklyn Park center plans Del. slots trip

The Brooklyn Park Senior Center will offer a bus trip to Harrington's Raceway Midway Slots in Harrington, Del., with the bus leaving at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday from the center.

The $10 cost includes bus fare and a buffet lunch. The bus is expected to return at 4 p.m. Registration. 410-222-6847.

South County center offers bereavement support

South County Senior Center will offer "Bereavement: Working Through It," an free, informal discussion group with Norma Crane for ages 55 and older, meeting at 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays.

Slide presentation: World traveler Bill Bruck will present a slide show of unusual places at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Annapolis Senior Center. 410-222-1818.

Hearing loss: Ingrid Gladwell, a hearing specialist from Beltone Hearing, will show a video on hearing loss at 10 a.m. Tuesday at South County Senior Center. Gladwell also will answer questions. Registration is requested. 410-798-4802.
