Two children were taken by helicopter to the Johns Hopkins Hospital pediatric intensive care unit yesterday after the minivan they were traveling in was struck by a car running a red light in Severn, authorities said.

The children - a 7-year-old girl and a 6-week-old boy - and their mother were in a Ford Windstar heading north on Veterans Highway about 4:15 p.m. when a Subaru Outback traveling west on Crain Highway ran a red light and struck them in the intersection, said Anne Arundel County police Sgt. James Fredericks.

The minivan rolled over once and the infant was thrown from the vehicle, strapped in his child safety seat. He was in good condition last night. The condition of the girl was not available. Authorities did not release the names of the children. The mother was not seriously injured, Fredericks said.

One passenger in the Subaru, a 4-year-old girl, was taken to North Arundel Hospital with possible abdominal injuries, then was transferred to Hopkins. She was in good condition last night. The girl's mother - the driver of the Subaru - and two other children in the car suffered minor injuries.

An investigation was continuing last night.
