Johnson pulls upset, tops Lentz

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Bill Johnson, at 48 the oldest man in the second round, recorded one of the day's few upsets, and it was a big one. He stopped medalist Bob Lentz to highlight play in the first two rounds of the annual Match Play championship of the Baltimore Municipal Golf Corporation at Forest Park Golf Course yesterday.

Johnson realized this might be a different day when, 3 down to Todd Schneider after nine holes, he won the next four and held on for a 2-up victory, his first in four starts. In the afternoon, he birdied the eighth and won the ninth to take a lead he did not surrender, winning, 2 and 1.

The second-round pairings were so close that when Charlie Narciso put out Kurt Klebrowski on the 11th green (8 and 7), no more than two holes separated each of the remaining six matches, Narciso reeled off nine birdies to set the stage for his two victories.

Defending champion Tim Osgood hit a 204-yard 4-iron shot for a hole in one at the sixth, went on to win the 16th and 17th to get even, then made a bunker shot for a birdie at 18 to stun Drew Forrester.
