Alexander Johnson Sr., 78, city employee

Alexander Johnson Sr., a retired city of Baltimore employee, died of heart failure July 22 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Perry Point. The Irvington resident was 78.

Born and raised in Annapolis, Mr. Johnson attended the old Stanton Elementary School and was a 1945 graduate of the former Bates High School. During World War II, he served in the Army.

Mr. Johnson was a longtime city employee in Baltimore. At the time of his retirement in 1987, he was an office supervisor for the Urban Services Agency.

His wife of 30 years, the former Minnie Mitchell, died in 1992.

Mr. Johnson enjoyed sports, crabbing, family reunions and listening to his police scanner.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. today at Joseph L. Russ Funeral Home, 2222 W. North Ave.

He is survived by a son, Alexander Johnson Jr. of Baltimore; three daughters, Renee Pettiford of Annapolis, Michelle Adams of Los Angeles and Murraydine Williams of Baltimore; five brothers, Abraham Johnson of Cleveland, and Harry Johnson, Ernest Harrod, Thomas Larkins and John Holiday, all of Annapolis; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
