A 1-month-old boy who survived a 39-foot fall after a car accident died Friday night at Johns Hopkins Children's Center.

Zyier Poole had been hospitalized since July 7, when the Ford Focus he was riding in slammed into a concrete barrier on Interstate 95 near the Moravia Road exit.

The child dropped from an elevated portion of the freeway into a 3-foot-by-3-foot steel trash bin filled with broken wood below the car, which was carrying another infant and three adults.

Nine-month-old Kiara K. Eatman was thrown from the car and killed.

Police said the infants were not properly secured in the car.

Kiara's mother, Jamilla Jackson, 22, was sitting in the back seat with the children. She was in serious but stable condition yesterday at Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Zyier's mother, Patrice Poole, 19, of Patterson, N.J., was riding in the front passenger seat. Her cousin, Tynisha E. Poole, 29, of New York, was driving the car. They were both treated and released from Shock Trauma.

"This is a very emotional time for my daughter," Anthony Poole, Zyier's grandfather, said yesterday. "All I can say is that she's broken. At this point, we just want to get some healing for the family.

"We cannot thank the [Baltimore] community enough for their support during this time of bereavement," he added.

Maryland Transportation Authority Police are investigating the accident. They said that a driver of a 2000 Honda might have been involved in the accident but would not say whether the woman driving the Honda - who was not injured - hit the Ford.

The passengers of the Ford have claimed their car was hit.
