Mary Helen McCarthy, a retired scheduling clerk and homemaker, died of scleroderma Thursday at Memorial Hospital in Easton. She was 70 and lived in Stevensville.

A longtime resident of Chestnut Hill Avenue in Ednor Gardens, Mrs. McCarthy had lived in Stevensville since 1975.

Born Mary Helen Quimby in Stevensville and raised in Randallstown, she was a 1951 graduate of Seton High School.

She was married in 1952 to Joseph McCarthy.

Mr. McCarthy was a scheduling clerk for more than 15 years at the Lever Brothers facility, now Unilever Home & Personal Care-USA, until retiring in 1993.

She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion.

Mrs. McCarthy enjoyed exploring back roads, gardening and spending time with her family.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at noon today at Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church, 4416 Wilkens Ave. in Arbutus.

She is survived by her husband; four daughters, Patricia Ann Murchison of Port Elgin, Ontario, Mary Kathleen Scheuerman of Price, Sharon Eileen McCarthy of Marlboro, Mass., and Shawn Marie Owens of Iowa; three brothers, Harvey Quimby, Paul Quimby and Earl Quimby, all of Suffolk, Va.; four sisters, Norma Cornelius of Norfolk, Va., Louise Merryman and Catherine Beatty, both of Bumpus Mills, Tenn., and Doris Willis of The Colony, Texas; and six grandchildren.
