Robert M. Baldwin Jr., who played football for the Colts during the 1960s and later was owner of two companies, died of colon cancer Sunday on his 59th birthday.

The former Fells Point resident was born in Baltimore and raised in Govans. He had lived in Ocean City since 1997. A fullback at City College, Mr. Baldwin was coached by George Young, who later coached the Baltimore Colts and was general manager of the New York Giants.

After graduating in 1962, he attended Clemson University on a football scholarship and earned a bachelor's degree in forestry. In 1966, he was signed by the Colts - the first rookie to be signed from Baltimore. He played through the 1969 season.

After his football career ended, he worked as a salesman for AABCO selling industrial rollers used in the printing industry.

In 1984, he established and was president of the Roller Corp. of America, which manufactured industrial rollers. After closing the Key Highway business in 1987, he moved to the Virgin Islands, where he founded Recovery and Recycling Inc., which recycled nonferrous metals. He closed the business in 1991. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Country Club of Maryland.

Services were held Wednesday.

Mr. Baldwin is survived by his wife of seven years, the former Sharon Serio; two daughters, Rebecca Baldwin of Tampa, Fla., and Rachel Baldwin of Greenville, S.C.; two brothers, Thomas Baldwin of Troy, Pa., and John Baldwin of Las Vegas; a sister, Barbara Smith of Baltimore; a stepson, Jason Butler of Baltimore; a stepdaughter, Brooke Ferrans of Jarrettsville; and two grandchildren.
