Ivan Moffat, 84, who was nominated for an Academy Award for the screen adaptation of Edna Ferber's novel Giant, died of a stroke July 4 in Los Angeles.

Mr. Moffat shared his Oscar nomination for Giant in 1956 with Fred Guiol. Starring Rock Hudson and James Dean, the film garnered 10 Academy Award nominations.

Among Mr. Moffat's screen- writing credits are Black Sunday, The Wayward Bus, Tender Is the Night and Boy on a Dolphin.

He also served as associate producer on such classic films as Shane and A Place in the Sun.

Born in Cuba, Mr. Moffat served in the Army during World War II. He also was part of a documentary film unit that covered the Allied effort in Europe.
