Financial adviser to give seminar on benefits tomorrow

Independent LifeStyle Association Inc. is sponsoring a senior benefits seminar featuring adviser Larry Prascus at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Sheration Barcelo, across from the Westfield Shoppingtown (Annapolis Mall).

Prascus, president and founder of Security Financial Services Inc. in Severna Park, offers seniors information on developing personalized financial plans. Topics will include avoiding taxes on interest and Social Security, earning higher yields without risking principal, avoiding the high cost of nursing home care, capital gains taxes, and the costs and delays of probate and estate taxes.

Art courses to be offered at South County center

South County Senior Center in Edgewater is offering courses through Anne Arundel Community College this month. Classes, which meet at the center, include:

"Folk Art," 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays, today to Sept. 11.

"Watercolors," 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays, today to Sept. 11.

Art with illustrator John Taylor, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursdays, tomorrow to Sept. 12.

"The Old Masters," from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Fridays to Sept. 13.

"Traditional Art," from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays.

Annapolis center plans photo album seminar

Creative Memories consultants Michelle Carroll and Kathy Zurn will offer a seminar on creating photo albums from 10 a.m. to noon Monday and July 29 at Annapolis Senior Center.

The Monday meeting will be an informational presentation. The July 29 meeting will feature a workshop.

The presentation is free. The cost of the workshop is $10, which includes supplies. Information: 410-222-1818.

Elderhostel, health checks set at Pasadena center

Pasadena Senior Center is offering programs this month:

Little Old Ladies from Pasadena women's barbershop chorus rehearsal is from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, July 19 and July 26. Information: 410-437-5379.

Elderhostel, "Adventures in Lifelong Learning" will be presented by Joan McCracken at 10 a.m. today.

Blood pressure checks and diabetes monitoring will be offered from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. tomorrow.

Sue James of Nutrition Prescriptives will offer information and a discussion on diet and grocery shopping for diabetics from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 18. Participants must register by Monday.

Pasadena center plans events for the summer

Events sponsored by Pasadena Senior Center this summer will include:

Trip to Steamboat Landing on July 19. The van will leave the center at 11 a.m. and return at 2 p.m. Reservations are required by Friday.

Classes to be offered include "Art Appreciation: The Renaissance," "Microsoft Word," "Hula" and "Modern American Presidents." Registration for summer classes is open from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. through July 19.

A shopping trip to the Amish Market in Annapolis is scheduled for Friday. The van will leave from the center at 9:45 a.m. and return at 2 p.m.

Health talks, auction among O'Malley events

O'Malley Senior Center will hold these events this month:

Representatives from the Maryland Transit Administration will be at the center from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Friday to take photos and issue ID cards for discounted fares on light rail, subway and MTA buses for those age 65 and older. Proof of age is required.

Dottie Mach's Senior Sensations will present a musical revue at 10:30 a.m. July 23.

A nutrition talk for diabetics will be given by Sue James of Nutrition Prescriptives at 10 a.m. Monday. Registration is required.

A silent auction will be held from Monday to July 19. Volunteers will answer questions about items and explain the bidding process. Bidders need not be present to win and senior center membership is not required. Items to be auctioned include gift baskets, a computer scanner and printer, art, antique dishes, gift certificates, jewelry, Christmas items and pottery.

Susan Knight will discuss long-term care insurance at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

South County center offers musical program

South County Senior Center has these events scheduled this month:

"Bereavement: Working Through It," an informal discussion group with Norma Crane for ages 55 and older, will meet at 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Meetings are free.

Sylvia and the Rhinestones will perform at 12:30 p.m. today.

A six-week program for grandparents and grandchildren sponsored by Anne Arundel Community College is under way. The program, which runs until Aug. 12, features weekly activities, including music, cooking, art and a nature trip. Registration is required. The cost is $60 or $12 per day.

An art class on watercolors will begin today at the center. Jim Vrable will provide instruction. The class will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. until Sept. 11. Registration is required and a fee will be charged.

A Christmas in July flea market will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Friday. All proceeds will benefit senior center activities and programs. The event is open to the public.

Life issues: Nancy Royster of Hospice of the Chesapeake will lead a discussion about end-of-life issues at 10 a.m. today at Pascal Senior Center, 125 Dorsey Road, Glen Burnie. Royster will have advance directive and living will forms available and will discuss their use. Registration is not required. 410-222- 6680.

Emergency phones: The Anne Arundel County Police Department will distribute free cellular phones at 12:45 p.m. tomorrow at Annapolis Senior Center. Officer Don Clime will explain how the program works and distribute phones, which can be used in an emergency to call 911. Senior center membership and registration are required. Phones will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. The center is in Eastport Shopping Center, 1027 Bay Ridge Ave. 410-222-1818.

Hospice care: Nancy Royster of Hospice of the Chesapeake will discuss hospice care at 10 a.m. July 18 at South County Senior Center, 27 Stepneys Lane, Edgewater. Painting class: South County Senior Center and Anne Arundel Community College will offer a class in one-stroke painting from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. starting July 17. Instructor Rheta Clugston will direct students in one-stroke, a freehand style of painting. This is a 10-week class for ages 55 and older. 410-222-1927 or 410-798-4802.

Basketry class: Alice Miller will offer a four-week basketry class from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. beginning July 18 at Pascal Senior Center. Participants will construct three baskets. The cost is $22, which includes supplies. The center is at 125 Dorsey Road, Glen Burnie. 410-222- 6680.

Bazaar workshop: Annapolis Senior Center will hold a holiday bazaar workshop with Evelyn Bacon from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. July 25. The center is in Eastport Shopping Center, 1027 Bay Ridge Ave. 410-222-1818.

Painting: A 10-week painting class for adults will be offered from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. beginning tomorrow at Brooklyn Park Senior Center. Registration will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays at the center. The course is sponsored by the Anne Arundel County Department Aging and Anne Arundel Community College. 410-222-6847.

Massage therapy: Mary Ann Roesler, a certified massage therapist, will be at Annapolis Senior Center from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 23. Roesler will offer mini-massages, with a choice of head, neck, back or hand massages. Registration and senior center membership are required. 410-222-1818.

Art tour: South County Senior Center will offer a six-week class that features a van trip each week to a Baltimore or Washington art museum. 410- 798-4802.

Duck tour: The Annapolis Senior Center will sponsor a "duck tour" of Baltimore on July 23. The duck is a World War II-era amphibious vehicle. The cost is $50 and includes transportation to and from Baltimore and an Italian buffet. Center membership is required. Reservations will be taken from 10 a.m. to noon Mondays and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. 410-222-1818.

Trips: Annapolis Senior Center, 1027 Bay Ridge Ave., has released its trip schedule. Trips include: boat ride to St. Michaels, Monday; Red Roost crab feast, Aug. 13; Sight and Sound Dinner Theater, Sept. 11; Western Maryland train trip, Oct. 22; Dutch Apple Dinner Theater, Nov. 7; and Christmas in Williamsburg, Dec. 3-5. 410-222- 1818.

Cravate for Care: Anne Arundel Senior Services Provider Group will hold its annual fund-raiser, Cravate for Care, at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Naval Academy Officers and Faculty Club. The group recently distributed proceeds from last year's event to three nonprofit organizations serving seniors in Anne Arundel County.
