Syracuse All-American Michael Powell scored five goals to lead the United States to a 22-7 victory over tournament host Australia in pool play of the International Lacrosse Federation world championship yesterday in Perth, Australia.
The Americans, who improved to 2-0 and sit atop the Blue Division, also got four goals from attackman Darren Lowe, who had his second consecutive strong game.
Lowe had six assists in the Americans' 21-6 tournament-opening victory over the Iroquois Nationals on Saturday.
Darren Nicholas led Australia (0-1) with four goals, and Dave Whitlock added two.
The United States led 5-1 after the first quarter and outshot the Australians 51-27 in the contest.
Looking for its sixth straight world championship, the U.S. team will play Canada tomorrow at 7 a.m.
The two teams have combined to win all eight of the world championships.
