Trouble in at least one underground feeder line twice disrupted electrical power last night to about 4,400 homes and businesses scattered throughout several city neighborhoods in Central Baltimore, said a spokesman for Baltimore Gas and Electric Co.

Service was restored to all but 1,200 customers by 11 p.m. yesterday, said Charles Welsh, a spokesman for BGE. Power is expected to return for those customers by early today. The utility serves 1.1 million customers in Central Maryland.

Welsh said power outages throughout the communities of Bolton Hill, Charles Village and several neighborhoods along Greenmount Avenue first were reported at about 6:20 p.m.

Welsh said more incidents of power outages were reported in the same areas shortly before 8 p.m. Repair crews responded and were attempting to locate the source of the outages, starting at the central substation south of Remington.

He said locating an underground break takes more time than locating one above ground.

Welsh said no emergencies were reported as a result of the disruption in service.
