Medical society names three to steering committee

The Medical Society Alliance of Anne Arundel County has elected Dorothy Elder, Jeanine Ove and Linda Weisburger to the steering committee. They will lead the organization through the coming year.

The alliance is a nonprofit service organization made up of physicians' families working to promote the health of the community.

N. Arundel Hospital names new head of subacute unit

North Arundel Hospital has announced that Peggy Caruso has been named director of nursing of the subacute unit. She is responsible for initiating quality improvement standards and ensuring the unit meets regulatory standards.

Caruso comes to North Arundel from Montgomery General Hospital, where she served as supervisor/manager of the transitional care unit.

AAMC classes available for expectant families

Anne Arundel Medical Center is offering classes for growing families. Classes include:

Labor and delivery orientation for expectant parents who are registered to deliver at the center, but do not intend to attend prepared childbirth classes. The course is free.

Labor and childbirth orientation for expectant parents who have registered at the center and who want to bring family members older than age 3 to the orientation. The course is free.

"Prepared Childbirth Education for First Time Parents," a program to help expectant mothers and their coaches prepare for childbirth. Classes are offered at several times and locations. The cost is $90.

"Childbirth Education for Teen Parents," a six-week course for teens who are expecting their first baby. Mothers-to-be are advised to bring a labor coach to the class. The cost is $10.

"Prepared Childbirth Refresher Program," a review of childbirth procedures, including relaxation techniques and comfort measures, as well as an orientation to labor and delivery services at the center. The cost is $45.

"Grandparents Update," a program for grandparents-to-be with the latest information about labor, delivery and infant care. The cost is $10.

"Preparing Brother/Sister," a 90-minute program for children ages 3 to 7. The cost is $10.

"New Parents Class," designed for first-time parents. The course is free.

Arundel medical center plans yoga programs

Anne Arundel Medical Center's Wellness Program offers yoga classes for all skill levels. Classes are held on the second floor of the Sajak Pavilion, 2002 Medical Parkway.

"Beginning Yoga" will be offered from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays; from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays; from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays; and from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturdays.

"Continuing Yoga" will be offered from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Mondays.

"Yoga for the Young at Heart" will be offered from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursdays.

"Yoga for Beginners and Advanced Students" will be offered from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays.

"Gentle Yoga" will be offered from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesdays.

"Cardiac Yoga Program" will be offered from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesdays.

Red Cross schedules health, safety classes

Central Maryland Chapter of the American Red Cross will offer courses in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid at several sites in the county. Classes will be taught at Severna Park United Methodist Church, 731 Benfield Blvd.; St. Philips Episcopal Church, 730 Bestgate Road, Annapolis; Edgewater Red Cross, 3475 Pike Ridge Road. Courses include:

"Adult CPR," focusing on emergency action, rescue-breathing, anti-choking procedures and rescue for victims ages 8 and older. The course is scheduled for Saturday in Severna Park; July 20 in Annapolis; and July 31 in Edgewater. Classes will meet from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The cost is $35.

"Community CPR," focusing on emergency action, rescue breathing, anti-choking procedures and rescue for adults, children and infants. It will be offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 20 in Annapolis. The cost is $40.

"Standard First Aid" includes instruction for one-rescuer CPR for victims older than 8 and basic first-aid skills such as treatment of severe bleeding and burns, injuries, shock and sudden illness. The course will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in Severna Park and July 31 in Edgewater. The cost is $40.

"Infant and Child CPR," focusing on emergency action principles, rescue-breathing, anti-choking procedures and CPR for infants and children from birth to age 8. The classes are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 13 in Severna Park. The cost is $37.

"Infant and Child CPR and First Aid," including infant and child CPR certification, with an emphasis on first aid for child-care providers. Classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 13 in Severna Park. The cost is $40.

"Baby Sitter Training," an interactive program for ages 11 to 15, will focus on skills for baby sitters of infants to primary school-age children. Topics include reacting to emergencies and sudden illness, and playing with and supervising children. (State law requires children younger than age 8 to be in the care of someone age 13 or older.) The two-session course will be offered from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday and July 13 in Edgewater. The cost is $40.

Crime-avoidance classes available for groups

The Red Cross offers a crime-avoidance class. The interactive course emphasizes security awareness; tough-target strategies; safety while walking, driving, taking public transportation or using an ATM; and responding to threatening situations. The cost is $9.95.
