George Scott Carter, a senior at the University of Maryland, College Park and a lifeguard, died of a seizure Thursday at Doctors Community Hospital of Prince George's County in Lanham. He was 23.

Mr. Carter, who worked as a lifeguard for American Pool Co., was stricken while working at Charlestown Apartments swimming pool in Greenbelt.

Born in Baltimore and raised in the northwestern section of the city, he was a 1997 graduate of Gilman School, where he played varsity basketball and was a member of the track team.

He began his college education at Morehouse College in Atlanta and transferred to the University of Maryland, where he was studying criminology and was a member of the rugby team.

A resident of Silver Spring, Mr. Carter was working as a lifeguard to earn tuition for college.

"He loved sports, people and his job," said his father, the Rev. George S. Carter of Woodstock, pastor of Walk of Life Ministries Inc. in Owings Mills, where his son was a member and usher.

Mr. Carter had earlier been a member for several years of Collective Christian Ministries Inc. in Owings Mills.

Services will be held at 6:30 p.m. today at Fallsroad African Methodist Episcopal Church, 2145 Pine Ave., Randallstown.

In addition to his father, Mr. Carter is survived by his mother, the Rev. Joyce C. Carter, also of Woodstock; his paternal grandmother, Mary S. Carter of Woodstock; his maternal grandparents, Charles and Mary Gross of Columbia; and many uncles, aunts and cousins.
