The Sun's Travis Haney spoke with Eric Schwarz, who has caddied for 23 years and been on Fuzzy Zoeller's bag since 2000.
Q: What is it like to caddie for a colorful guy like Fuzzy?
A: I've known him for 23 years, since I've been a caddie. He's a great guy to caddie for, a fun guy to be around. How can you not like him? He's the same guy off the course that he is on the course. He's a really likable guy. I mean, everybody out there loves him. I'm happy to have the job.
Q: Since you had known him so long, how did the caddying job come about?
A: I basically didn't have a job, and I knew he didn't have a caddie at the time. I just went up to him and said, "Hey, Fuzzy, what's going on? I'm looking for a job." He said, "I'll see you at the Honda," which was the next tournament he was playing. It took me all of about a minute to get the job.
Q: Fuzzy seems to be playing a lot better now that he's moved to the Senior PGA Tour, even winning the last major, the Senior PGA Championship. Have you noticed a rebirth of sorts since he turned 50?
A: The senior tour has rejuvenated him a little bit. He was struggling some on the regular tour when I first started caddying for him. We only made one cut the first year I worked for him and only made five last year. The senior tour's great because you don't miss any cuts out here [most tournaments are three-round events].
Q: As a caddie, what is the transition like going from the PGA Tour to the senior tour? How does that change the way you work?
A: When I started, we were going on [the PGA] Tour to places he'd played numerous times. He knew where to hit his tee shots. He knew where to hit his iron shots. He knew how the greens broke. Of course, it's different this year because we've only been to two or three places we've played before. So I have to get there before he gets there to take a look at the golf course to tell him how the holes go. It's a little bit more work, but now that we're on the senior tour, we get carts now.
