Raymond N. Mullen, 89, oil company salesman

Raymond N. "Moon" Mullen, a retired oil company salesman and avid sports fan, died in his sleep Wednesday at Stella Maris Hospice in Timonium. He was 89.

The longtime Pikesville resident was born in Hagerstown and reared in Baltimore. A 1931 graduate of Loyola High School, he later went to work in sales for Hoffberger Oil Co. in 1940. He retired in 1975.

A religiously devout man, he was an active communicant of St. Charles Borromeo Roman Catholic Church in Pikesville, where he served as an usher for more than 40 years.

He was a member and past president of the Pikesville Kiwanis Club, which he joined in 1954. He was also a 60-year member of the Pikesville Volunteer Fire Company.

Proud of his Irish ancestry, Mr. Mullen was a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.

He was a longtime collector of Orioles memorabilia and also was a Colts fan. He enjoyed cooking stews and soups for family and friends, family members said.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. today at St. Charles Borromeo Roman Catholic Church, 101 Church Lane, Pikesville.

Mr. Mullen is survived by is wife of 58 years, the former Katherine Engle; a daughter, Jean Hofmeister of Hunt Valley; a sister, Dorothy Faulstich of DeBarry, Fla.; three grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
