Patuxent refuge plans mini-day camps in July

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Patuxent Research Refuge will offer two- and three-day mini-day camps for children at its north tract on Route 198, between the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Route 32, in Laurel.

"Teens Gone Wild!" is a wildlife research and management camp for ages 13 to 15 and will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 22-24. The program includes radio tracking of wildlife, biological monitoring and other activities a wildlife biologist and researcher might do.

"Awesome Animal Adaptations," a program on why animals are the way they are for ages 5 to 7, will be held from 10 a.m. to noon July 27-28.

"Animal Planet," also for ages 5 to 7, will present mammals, birds, fish and other creatures and their unique characteristics from 10 a.m. to noon July 30-31.

The programs are free, but reservations are required.

Children's programs continuing at library

The Savage branch library, 9525 Durness Lane, is offering summer programs for young children.

"Play Partners," "All Together Now," "Super Saturdays," "3, 2, Fun!" and other programs will continue through next month and early August.

Stories, games, rhymes, songs and crafts are offered for young children. "Summer Bear Hugs: A Signed Storytime," with sign-language interpreter Kathy Ponger, will be offered at 7 p.m. July 16.

A Parent-Child Book Club, for ages 9 to 12 with a parent, is to be offered from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. July 20 and Aug. 24. A Long Way from Chicago by Richard Peck is the reading for July 20; Midnight Magic by Avi will be discussed Aug. 24.

Tent theater: South Laurel Recreation Council and St. Luke Lutheran Church in Silver Spring will sponsor three free performances by the Tent Troupe, a traveling summer theater group, on the grounds of Montpelier Mansion, Route 197 at Muirkirk Road in Laurel. The group will present the musical Godspell at 8 p.m. Sunday and Monday, rain or shine. A children's show, which includes 100% Chance of Rain and Big Top Tales, is planned for 1:45 p.m. Monday. Plant clinic: Howard County master gardeners will hold a plant clinic at the Savage branch library from 10 a.m. to noon July 27, Aug. 24 and Sept. 28. Gardeners may bring soil samples and cuttings from ailing plants for diagnosis and advice. 410-880-5980.
