Alice D. Payne, 83, elementary school teacher

Alice D. Payne, a retired elementary school teacher, died of complications from Parkinson's disease Thursday at Keswick Multi-Care Center. She was 83 and lived in Walbrook for many years.

Before her 1979 retirement, she taught at Walbrook Elementary School and Harriet Beecher Stowe Elementary School in Northwest Baltimore.

Born in Baltimore and raised on Druid Hill Avenue, Alice Davis was a 1936 graduate of Frederick Douglass High School. She earned degrees in education from Coppin State College and Morgan State University.

She was a member of social clubs, including the Dilettantes, the Pennies Club and the Northwest Group.

Her husband of 58 years, Robert Payne Sr., a former industrial arts teacher, died last year.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. today at Grace Presbyterian Church, 2604 Banister Road, where she was a lifelong member.

She is survived by a son, Robert Payne Jr. of Columbia; a daughter, Patricia Payne of Randallstown; and two brothers, Avon W. Davis of Chicago and E. Lloyd Davis of Baltimore.
