Caves Valley is pretty as a picture. That will be plain to the professional golfers and the 150,000 or so spectators expected later this week for the 2002 U.S. Senior Open. What will not be so obvious is the care and seeding that have made Caves Valley, opened for play in 1991, such hallowed ground for golfers in such a short time. Manicured to perfection and with babbling brooks, rolling hills and wildlife, its a lovely setting for a major golf championship. But the 7,000-plus yard, par-72 layout is no walk in the park. By Sunday, the seniors will be jubilant, exhausted or cursing the grounds they walk on. Thats golf. But as the photos here and on Page 3D suggest, they won't soon forget the experience.
