Phones, power restored in city

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Telephone and electrical service was restored to dozens of homes in Baltimore's Guilford neighborhood yesterday after utility crews repaired cables that had been mistakenly cut.

Workers putting in a sprinkler system at a home on Overhill Road, near Charles Street, accidentally cut a phone line belonging to Verizon and a 13,000-volt cable belonging to Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Sandy Arnette, a spokeswoman for Verizon, said 14 customers in the North Baltimore neighborhood were without phone service for about 24 hours. Rei Spinnicchio, a spokesman for BGE, said 65 customers lost power.

Exacerbating the problem for residents was that not only were land-line telephones inoperable but because electrical power was also cut off, they were not able to use cordless phones and computers or recharge cell phones.

Crews began repairing the Verizon line about 10 a.m. yesterday. They could not begin work until BGE had cut service to the area. Arnette said the repair work allowed Verizon's crews to replace the old cable with 246 feet of new cable.

Full telephone and electrical service was restored by 7 p.m. yesterday.

It is believed the workers putting in the sprinkler system did not know about the cables.
