Lou Doris Spencer, a retired caseworker for the city Department of Social Services, died of a stroke Friday at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. She was 69.
A longtime resident of Riggs Avenue, she retired in 1994 after more than 20 years as a caseworker for the city Department of Social Services Medical Assistance Division.
Born and raised in Baltimore, Lou Doris Simpson was a 1950 graduate of Frederick Douglass High School. She enlisted in the Navy and served as a nursing assistant until she was discharged in 1953.
She worked as a nursing assistant for many years at the former University Hospital, former Lutheran Hospital and Sinai Hospital before going to work for the city.
She married Bob Spencer in 1953, and the couple owned and operated a dry cleaning service.
Mrs. Spencer was an active member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 263 and the 1950 Douglass High School Alumni Association.
For most of her life, Mrs. Spencer was a parishioner of Mount Zion United Methodist Church, where she served on many committees and was a member of the choir.
She enjoyed visiting Jamaica and traveling by steamship.
Services for Mrs. Spencer will be held at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow at Mount Zion United Methodist Church, Liberty Heights and Wabash avenues.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Brian J. Spencer of Baltimore; a daughter, Kyle A. Saunders of Carney; a brother, Ralph Simpson of Lochearn; two grandchildren; three aunts; and several nephews and nieces.
