A two-alarm fire swept through a strip of Roland Park businesses in the 500 block of W. Cold Spring Lane, destroying a sandwich shop and a remodeling company and damaging several other shops early yesterday.

The blaze started about 1:30 a.m. in a building that was home to three businesses - a Subway sandwich shop; Thomson Remodeling Co., a residential contracting company; and the former location of Carmen's of Roland Park Family Cuts barbershop, fire officials said.

Six engines and 46 firefighters brought the blaze under control at 2:49 a.m., fire officials said.

The fire apparently originated at the Subway shop, fire officials said, and spread to neighboring businesses on the block, including the Daily Grind coffee shop, Big Sky Bread Co. and a tanning salon, which also were damaged. The Daily Grind is expected to reopen today.

No injuries were reported, but the blaze caused the roof of the building where the fire started to collapse. Red signs on the front of its boarded-up facade yesterday read: "Condemned."

Clyde Thomson, owner of the remodeling company, said his sample bathrooms, kitchens and granite table tops were destroyed in the fire. But he said that he plans to rebuild and reopen by Christmas.

"We're gone, but we'll rise again from the ashes," said Thomson, who estimated structural damage from $300,000 to $400,000. "We're not going to relocate. We'll rebuild in that spot."

Kay Davis, manager of Alonso's Restaurant in the 400 block of W. Cold Spring Lane, said that she served lunch to proprietors who lost their businesses and one was looking for a new location yesterday.

The cause is under investigation, fire officials said.
