Roy Vucinich and Doug Johnson turned in two good rounds apiece at last year's State Farm Senior Classic.
But it's the one bad round that has made them want to get back to Hayfields Country Club so badly.
And, after becoming two of the three Greater Baltimore Classic qualifiers yesterday at Hillendale Country Club, they'll get their respective shots at the course.
Doug LaCrosse of Tampa, Fla., was the third qualifier.
In last year's Senior PGA Tour tournament, Vucinich shot 78 in the first round before playing the weekend at 7 under par to finish with a 1-under 215, tied for 22nd.
"With last year being the first year this tournament was here, I guess I didn't know the course too awful well. It was a little disappointing, but I feel a lot better about this course now," said Vucinich, who shot the low qualifying round in good conditions at Hillendale.
Vucinich's 6-under 66 included six birdies in nine holes during the middle of his round. The last tour event the Pittsburgh resident played in was the Senior PGA Championship two weeks ago at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.
"By playing there and then being here, I hope I am getting myself tournament-tough," said Vucinich, who also qualified for next week's U.S. Senior Open at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills. "It's tough to play two or three tournaments a year and be ready for how some of the guys can play these events. You have to build yourself up to it."
Johnson's Hayfields disappointment came late rather than early.
An opening-round 66 gave The Villages, Fla., resident the lead after the first day, and an even-par 72 Saturday put him into Sunday's final group with tour veterans Tom Kite and Allen Doyle.
Johnson shot 4-over 76 in the last round to finish in a tie for 14th at 2-under 214, nine strokes behind Doyle.
"They played great, made some putts, and I just played OK. If I get [the lead] again this time, I'll hopefully deal with it a little better," said Johnson, who, along with LaCrosse, shot 4-under 68 to qualify for the Classic. "I am just thrilled to be able to come back here."
