Baseball naming rights getting out of hand

Those ridiculous baseball owners are at it again, padding their revenues by giving ballpark naming rights to mega-corporations that manufacture products that have little or no ties to the grand old game.

The latest is Minute Maid Park in Houston. When you stop to think about it, we are probably not far off from taking in a game at "Viagra Park," or perhaps "Crest White Strips Field."

We are probably just a few years away from seeing corporate sponsors' names and logos emblazoned across the players' jerseys. Maybe here in Baltimore we could get players' jerseys with a likeness of Steven L. Miles and that famous handle, "Let's talk about it," stitched on the fronts of their jerseys, just below the Orioles script.

Oh, the possibilities are limitless! Just think how Mr. Ray's Hair Weaves would have looked on a big-league jersey.

Will the last person out of the park pick up the (Rawlings) rosin bag, turn off the (GE) lights and secure the (Master) lock on the gate?

How about Angelos as Orioles' All-Star?

After reading Joe Christensen's article in The Sun last Sunday regarding who will represent the Orioles in the All-Star Game, it's obvious that no Orioles player is deserving of participating.

I would, therefore, suggest that the team promote owner Peter Angelos as its candidate.

He raised ticket prices while setting the lofty goal for the team of not losing more games than they win for the first time in five years.

Giving the fans mediocrity while taking more of their money certainly makes him an All-Star in the eyes of baseball commissioner Bud Selig.

Jackson's players make winning easy

Please. Nine titles? Ties Red Auerbach? Wow. I'm underwhelmed.

My mother, who knows about as much about basketball as Attila the Hun did, could have won nine titles with the talent Phil Jackson had.

Don't get me wrong, I like Phil. But sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. And that Phil - he's lucky!
