Colonial Pipeline Co. will close a small portion of Old Frederick Road - from Thistle Downs Court to Camden Meadows Court in Woodbine - to service part of underground pipeline that crosses the road there.
The pipeline, which carries gasoline, home heating oils, jet fuel and other refined petroleum products, links Gulf Coast refineries to markets in the South and Northeast. The Woodbine section of pipe begins in Greensboro, N.C., and travels to a tank farm in Dorsey Junction, Md.
An electronic sensing device - called a "smart pig" because of the squealing sound it makes as it travels through steel pipe - has indicated that maintenance might be needed in this part of the line, which will be inspected for possible problems.
The road will be closed at 9 a.m. tomorrow. The project is expected to be complete in one to two weeks, weather permitting. Detour signs will be posted along Old Frederick, Woodbine, Frederick and Morgan Station roads.
Colonial Pipeline supplies jet fuel to Baltimore-Washington International Airport, and much of the gasoline, diesel fuel and home heating oil used in the Baltimore region.
