Grace Lutheran commissions new outreach ministers

Grace Lutheran Church of Westminster recently commissioned its first class of a new outreach ministry.

The Stephen Ministry was begun to try to reach more people with one-to-one Christian care. The church's pastors, the Rev. David Helfrich and the Rev. Richard Krebs, commissioned the first class of Gaile Bowen, Marge Davidson, Bob and Luanne Frebertshauser, and Mary and Wil Shimoda.

Assisting in the commissioning ceremony were Dot Sisler and Jean Cathey, Stephen ministers at Wesley Freedom United Methodist Church, Eldersburg; and Gloria Blakeney, Bonnie Cooper, and Marj and Park Espenschade, Stephen leaders at Grace Lutheran.

The group will serve under the leadership of Krebs and Stephen Ministry coordinator Marj Espenschade.

The Stephen ministers received 50 hours of training in Christian caregiving skills such as active listening, distinctly Christian care, feelings, confidentiality, crisis theory, and ministering to people in specific situations.

Stephen ministers will meet twice a month with their leaders for continuing education and supervision as they strive to provide quality Christian caregiving.
