Female patient assaulted in hospital room

THE BALTIMORE SUN

A woman receiving treatment for an infected leg at the University of Maryland Medical Center has alleged that she was sexually assaulted by another patient early Friday, said her husband and a hospital spokeswoman.

The 47-year-old woman from Baltimore said that a man staying in a room across the hall entered her room, unfastened her clothes and touched her, her husband said.

Ellen Beth Levitt, a hospital spokeswoman, confirmed the husband's report of his wife's assault. "To my knowledge this has never happened before," she added.

The alleged assault took place on the eleventh floor of the medical center.

University police, responding to a call from hospital security, arrested the suspect, removed him from the hospital and took him to Central Booking, Levitt said. She said Baltimore police and the Baltimore Sexual Assault Investigation Unit were notified.

The hospital spokeswoman would not identify the suspect, and the university's Baltimore campus police chief refused to comment. Baltimore police said last night they had no information about the case.

The victim was moved to another floor, where she was given a medical examination and offered counseling and support services, both the husband and Levitt said.

After receiving treatment for her infected leg, the victim left the hospital yesterday. Her husband called The Sun, he said, because campus police did not return his calls seeking information on what happened to the suspect.
