FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - He is all grown up, no longer a teen-ager with loads of raw talent but a 22-year-old golfer considered by many to be the next - and first - rival of Tiger Woods.
Sergio Garcia of Spain came into the 102nd U.S Open here on the Black Course at Bethpage State Park with two victories this year, one on the PGA Tour and one on the European Tour.

Hammond hangs in
Former Tour regular Donnie Hammond has played sporadically this year, but well under some tough circumstances. He has made the cut in four of the six events in which he has played, and hopes to make it five for seven here.
Hammond shot a 3-over 73 yesterday.
"I played pretty well," said Hammond, whose best finish in an Open came 10 years ago at Pebble Beach, where he tied for 23rd. "I scrambled around and got up and down for par three of the four times."
Hammond, who grew up in Frederick, said that Bethpage Black might be the hardest driving course he has ever played.
"I've played a lot of hard courses, but this is one you can be scared of if you're not driving it well," said Hammond, who hit 10 of 14 fairways. "I'd like to play four days here. That would be fun."
