The Rainbow Theatre had scheduled a sing-along performance by Mr. Skip last week as its season finale. But the theater, which provides shows for young children at Slayton House in Wilde Lake Village Center, is extending its season this year.
To make up for its Sept. 13 show canceled after the terrorist attacks, Nada Brahma will offer three shows this summer, said Janice Friedel, who runs the theater.
Nada Brahma, a Baltimore-based music program led by Tim Gregory, will offer shows at 10 a.m. on June 25, July 16 and Aug. 6. The program, which appeals to a wide range of ages, explores the many cultures of the world through a variety of instruments, songs and dances.
The performances are open to the public, and participants in the three-week theater arts camp at Slayton House also will attend. Camp of the Arts participants always put on their own show, and this year they will get to attend one as well.
"We thought instead of him [Gregory] losing out money, we would schedule special performances this summer, invite the campers and then also sell tickets to the public," Friedel said.
That plan will give the campers, ages 7 to 13, another activity, since the indoor pool is closed for renovation, she said.
The Rainbow Theatre, founded about five years ago, offers performances specifically for preschool-age children. The shows are held at the 240-seat theater in Slayton House, the community center of Wilde Lake Village Center in Columbia.
"We just found out there was a need for performances for children in this area," said Friedel about the theater's beginning. "There wasn't a lot of choice."
