KeyCase keyboard expands PDA users' typing horizons a bit

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Doing even a minuscule amount of writing on a personal digital assistant can be a joyless task.

To add a little ease to the process, Logitech has come up with the KeyCase ($100), a combination soft-cloth, tri-fold PDA case and miniature QWERTY keyboard with "hot keys."

You should back up all of the information inside your PDA with a HotSync connection to your Windows or Macintosh PC before starting installation. Once your data are saved to the computer, you insert a software disk into your computer to upload Logitech's TypeAway, AppCentral and other software onto your PDA.

That done, unfold the KeyCase and plug your PDA into a socket on a cradle attached to the keyboard. You can even stand your PDA up to look at it like a computer screen while you type.

Typing on a KeyCase isn't quite like typing on a regular PC keyboard. The soft cloth keyboard is only a little over half the size of a regular one and you can't use the shift with a letter key for a capital letter. Also, you'll want to fiddle with the keyboard sensitivity once you've used it for a short while to keep from mistyping words.

Yet, while you won't want to type a novel with KeyCase, you'll marvel at how much easier it makes typing an e-mail of more than four words.
