Taneytown to receive $32,500 in state funds for skate park

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Taneytown is to receive $32,500 in state Program Open Space money July 1 for a skateboard park, but city officials aren't sure what to build or where to build it.

The money was approved a few years ago to build the park, Councilman W. Robert Flickinger said during Monday night's meeting.

The council debated whether the money could be used for something else.

A recent survey on the possible park yielded about 130 responses from the town's 6,000 residents. All but five were in favor, he said.

Residents have complained about skateboarders using ramps to businesses and sidewalks around homes.

Councilman Jim A. Wieprecht said that a skateboard park won't eliminate that behavior but could add to youth activities in Taneytown.

The issue was put on hold after Mayor Henry C. Heine Jr. requested a plan, including funding, possible locations, estimated construction costs, and a look at other skate parks in Carroll County.
