Teacher workshops on environment set at Patuxent refuge
The Patuxent Research Refuge will offer workshops for teachers June 21-28 at the National Wildlife Visitor Center, Laurel.
The workshops will provide interdisciplinary curricula and activities for grades kindergarten through 12. Subjects will include wildlife art, hands-on habitat assessment, ecological concepts and other activities that teachers can use to teach environmental concepts. Some MSDE credits may be available.
The cost is $5. The visitor center, a facility of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is off Powder Mill Road, between the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Route 197.
Free workshops will be offered to camp counselors, day care providers and youth leaders to help them plan day trips to the visitor center. The workshops will be held from 10 a.m. to noon June 23 and 29.

County school board slates closed meetings
The Howard County Board of Education will meet in closed sessions at 1 p.m. tomorrow and 11 a.m. Friday at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.

Red Cross camp's goal is leadership development
The Central Maryland chapter of the American Red Cross will hold a summer Leadership Development Camp from July 22-26 at Skycroft Conference Center in Middletown.
Campers will receive training in disaster response, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, first aid, international humanitarian law and crime avoidance. Leadership and professional training also will be offered in communication, marketing, fund raising, public speaking and organizing.
The facility includes air-conditioned rooms, an outdoor pool, hiking trails, an indoor gym and mountain views. Students entering 10th and 11th grades are encouraged to apply. The cost is $160. Scholarships are available.

MS society offers camp for patients' offspring
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society will offer Kids' Camp 2002 from Aug. 18-21 for children, ages 7 to 12, whose lives have been affected by a parent or close relative who has the disease. The camp will be held at Kamp A-Kom-Plish in Nanjemoy, in Charles County.
The camp offers horseback riding, a splash playground, an Olympic-size pool, a ropes course, paddle boats, air-conditioned cabins and 24-hour supervision. The cost is $175; $75 for siblings.

Scholarships target future child care providers
The Maryland Higher Education Commission is offering Maryland Child Care Provider Scholarships to Maryland residents who attend a college in the state and enroll as full- or part-time degree-seeking undergraduates in a child-development or early-childhood education program.
Successful applicants must agree to work as child care providers in Maryland for one year for every year of assistance received.
Awards range from $500 to $2,000 per academic year. The application deadline is Saturday.

Special education program needs summer volunteers
Volunteers are needed for the Consolidated Special Education Summer School Program, to be held from 7:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. weekdays, June 26 through Aug. 1, at Cedar Lane School and Harper's Choice Middle School.
Volunteers must be at least 13 years old or about to enter eighth grade. Experience is not necessary. Applications are available at Howard County middle and high school guidance offices and at Swansfield Elementary School.
