Man, 41, charged in death of wife, who was hit by van

A Curtis Bay man was charged with negligent homicide yesterday after hitting his wife with a minivan in the parking lot of a Brooklyn Park church, police said.

Charles Linwood Page, 41, of the 800 block of Glade Court was charged with negligent homicide by motor vehicle while intoxicated, police said. The victim was identified yesterday as Valerie Ann Page, 38.

Police said Charles Page ran to a nearby store and asked the clerk to call 911 because a woman had been injured. He then drove away - leaving his wife in the church lot - about 2 a.m. He was stopped by Baltimore police on Hanover Street and was taken into custody by Anne Arundel police. Detectives said he admitted to running into his wife with his 1984 Plymouth minivan.

Page was being held without bail yesterday at the county detention center in Annapolis.

Woman killed by fire linked to oxygen tank

A Glen Burnie woman became Anne Arundel County's second fire-related fatality of the year in a blaze that has been linked to her oxygen tank, fire officials said yesterday.

Carol Christopolus, 51, who suffered burns on 90 percent of her body, died at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center burn unit, said County Fire Division Chief John M. Scholz.

Firefighters found Christopolus on the floor of her apartment in the 7800 block of Tall Pines Court, her clothes ablaze, about 10 a.m. Monday. The fire apparently started when the victim ignited a lighter too close to her oxygen tank, Scholz said. The fire remained under investigation yesterday.

Jury selection begins in prison murder trial

Jury selection began yesterday in the murder trial of a Maryland House of Correction inmate who is accused of killing a fellow inmate in 1999.

John Ashby, 30, who is serving time for a 1989 killing in Prince George's County, is charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of Damon Campbell, 28, who was convicted in 1995 in a Harford County slaying.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. The trial, before Anne Arundel County Circuit Judge Ronald A. Silkworth, is expected to continue through next week.
