Padres update

San Diego has been hit hard with injuries. Opening Day starter Kevin Jarvis and No. 2 pitcher Brian Tollberg are both on the disabled list, as is All-Star Phil Nevin and rookie third baseman Sean Burroughs. So it's little wonder the Padres have lost eight of their past 10 games, scoring three runs or more just twice in that span. Ryan Klesko has reached base in 52 consecutive games. Closer Trevor Hoffman has been his dominant self this season, and has converted 22 consecutive save opportunities, dating to last season. Hoffman no longer has an overpowering fastball, but he has baseball's most devastating changeup. With 329 career saves, he needs just one more to match John Wetteland for seventh on the all-time list. The Padres released Lopez after last season, and he'll have a chance to show them what they've been missing Wednesday.
