Three at Jessup charged in 4th inmate's death

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Three convicted killers serving lengthy prison terms were indicted yesterday on charges that they killed a fourth prisoner at the Maryland House of Correction Annex this year and wounded another.

The three prisoners named in Anne Arundel County grand jury indictments could face the death penalty if convicted, but State's Attorney Frank R. Weathersbee said he has not decided whether to pursue that.

The indictments accuse the men of the Jan. 7 fatal stabbing of Lorenzo Hazel, 35, who was serving a life term at the maximum-security prison in Jessup for a murder and armed robbery in Prince George's County.

"He was stabbed over 50 times," Weathersbee said. He said one of the defendants had an argument earlier in the day with Hazel and "this was a method of resolving that argument."

Correction officials said Hazel was stabbed in a recreation room at the prison.

Wade Clark Jr., Michael Darryl Henry and William Dereck Stewart are each charged with murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, and felony and misdemeanor assault, court documents say.

Clark, 54, was ordered by a Prince George's County judge to serve a 50-year sentence beginning in 1993 for murder and related convictions; Henry, 38, was ordered by a Prince George's County judge to serve a life term in 1979 for murder; and Stewart, 19, was sentenced in 1998 by an Anne Arundel County judge to serve life for murder and related convictions, according to prison and court records.

They are also charged with assaulting inmate Tyree Echols, who was serving a life sentence for murder and related convictions.
