Panelists oppose county agreement on Taylor Center
Members of the David Taylor Redevelopment Advisory Committee have sent a letter to Anne Arundel County Executive Janet S. Owens opposing a redevelopment agreement for the shuttered Navy base near Annapolis.
Six members of the advisory committee, all of whom voted in April not to support a redevelopment package for the former David Taylor Research Center near Annapolis, signed the letter, said Jana Carey, a resident of Ferry Farms and a member of the redevelopment committee.
In the letter, the group says the legal agreement between the county and the developers, Annapolis Partners, is full of "loopholes" and that it will not protect nearby communities.
A spokesman for Owens said yesterday that the county executive had yet to read the letter.
The redevelopment agreement is expected to be introduced to the County Council at its June 17 meeting.
Moyer plans 'wade-in' and boat trip tomorrow
Annapolis Mayor Ellen O. Moyer will gauge the health of Annapolis waterways during a "wade-in" and a boat trip tomorrow.
The event, inspired by similar events held annually around the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, will begin at 8:30 a.m. as teams from the Annapolis Environmental Commission wade into the headwaters of College, Weems and Spa creeks.
At 9:30 a.m., those teams will join Moyer at the waterfront park beside the McNasby's building in Eastport to wade into Back Creek.
The public is invited to participate in the Back Creek wade-in and in a boat trip to the Back Creek Nature Park, where Moyer is planning a native species garden. A state archaeologist will show participants where he believes the underwater remains of Revolutionary-era Fort Horn lie.
For more information, call the city's public information office at 410-263-1183. Kayaks for the boat trip, which is suitable for beginners, can be rented from Spring River Corp. at 311 Third St. in Eastport, 410-263-2303.
Teachers union lists political endorsements
The Teachers Association of Anne Arundel County announced its endorsements for this year's election yesterday.
The group endorsed County Executive Janet S. Owens, a Democrat, who it said had "demonstrated her support for public education." Owens has yet to announce a re-election bid, but she has been campaigning for months.
In the County Council race, the teachers union endorsed incumbent Pamela G. Beidle in the 1st District; incumbent Daniel E. Klosterman Jr. in the 2nd District; incumbent Shirley Murphy in the 3rd District; incumbent Bill D. Burlison in the 4th District; George Maloney, a Severna Park businessman, in the 5th District; incumbent Barbara D. Samorajczyk in the 6th District; and William A. Rinehart, a former county employee, in the 7th District. All are Democrats.
Burns announces run for county state's attorney
Former Del. Michael W. Burns of Linthicum will seek the Republican nomination to run against Anne Arundel County State's Attorney Frank R. Weathersbee, who is seeking a fourth term.
Burns, 44, was elected in 1994 but ousted by Democrat Theodore J. Sophocleus four years later. Burns has been head of the Maryland Right to Life Political Action Committee, and has served on the Republican State Central Committee and in several community groups.
He said yesterday that he believes the prosecutor's office needs stronger political leadership, a more consistent approach to death penalty cases, and a more aggressive stance in criminal justice issues.
