Dontee D. Stokes, the man charged with shooting a Catholic priest he had accused of sexual assault, tested negative for marijuana yesterday after two weeks of positive tests, law enforcement sources said.
Because marijuana can stay in the body as long a 30 days, officials were unsure whether Stokes had been under its influence when police say he shot the Rev. Maurice J. Blackwell on May 13, or whether he was using the drug during his court-imposed home detention. Yesterday's test effectively ruled out both possibilities.
Stokes first tested positive for marijuana May 20, three days after a district court judge placed him on pre-trial home detention. Authorities continued to test him regularly in an attempt to determine when he might have used the substance.
